On 26 February 2025, the European Commission published its so-called “Omnibus Package”, a set of proposals to simplify inter alia European Union rules on sustainability reporting and sustainability due diligence. With this Directive, the European Commission has initiated a major revision and simplification of sustainability reporting requirements, including the postponement of the CSRD Directive by two years and company thresholds have been amended. In addition, the once complex ESRS framework will be simplified to improve clarity and ease compliance.
While these adjustments aim to ease administrative complexities, the fight against climate change and the acceleration of decarbonisation remain key elements to the European Green Deal. Therefore, beyond reducing reporting burdens, the EU Commission is strengthening financial support initiatives for businesses embracing sustainability under the Clean Industrial Deal, unlocking substantial public and private funding to accelerate the transition.
For many, doing business sustainability is central to their operations, business goals and future plans. With these recent developments, it remains all the more important for companies to align with rapidly evolving requirements.
